Dear Friends,
February, 2012
Kids seem to thrive on risky behavior. I see it everyday; kids willingly putting themselves at serious risk to win the approval or attention of someone. I walk down crowed hallways teeming with students who will say anything – do anything just to be noticed.
And yet, the one risk so many of them avoid is trusting an adult. Many have been wounded by one close to them. Others have been let down so often it is easy to assume I am no different.
How can they trust a God they can’t see if they aren’t sure they can trust me…it’s too risky. How do we get them past this obstacle?
In order to get them to trust me, I have to take a risk. I have to enter their world. I have to listen and learn about their story. I have to find out what really matters to them. I have to prove that I am worthy of their trust.
See, if I am worthy of their trust, then perhaps the God who sent me is as well. if I actually care about them, maybe He does too.
But this is risky business. It means I have to be vulnerable and honest myself. I have to sacrifice my pride, time and energy in order to serve these kids well. That is the only way. I do it because it is how God has gifted me and what His Gospel calls me to do.
I want to encourage you to take a risk with me. Consider how God has gifted you. What has He made you passionate about? What would it look like to use those gifts in a risky way? One that required His help to achieve?
I can’t thank you enough for your partnership as we share the message of Jesus with lost students. There is not another more worthwhile mission. The Gospel moves forward here because of your faithfulness.
In His service,
Jimmy Grosz
